How to make your blog posts copyrighted for free.

Why do you need to copyright your blog contents?

In today’s internet world, millions of articles are being posted online daily. A typical blogger must have spent a few hours to research and create their blog post for their readers. They have invested time and effort to make their article a good quality read for people.

However, once bloggers posted their articles online, It is very easy for anyone to copy the article and claim it as their own.  And this is clearly an act of stealing.  These people are called Content scrapers.

So how can the Blogging copyright laws help us?

This serves as  our protection as owners of the articles.  Nobody is allowed to copy and claim ownership on its contents.  And if ever someone is guilty of doing this, the owner of the blog has the right to file a complaint to remove the copied content.

So how do you copyright your Blogs?

The most common and easiest way is to add a copyright notice with updated date at your blog or website.  Although this note won’t digitally protect your blog, this notice serves as an unwritten rule for anyone not to copy the content owned by the writer.

You can easily add this at the footnote of your WordPress site by following these steps:

  1.  Go to Dashboard, select Appearance
  2.  Click Editor
  3.  Select the footer.php from the listed templates
  4.  At the very bottom of the code, just type in: Copyright © 2017 (Name of owner) All rights reserved.

And to make your content digitally safe from being copied, Install the WP-Content plugin.  This plugin can help disable the Right click – copy of the mouse for anyone viewing your post.  Since most content scrapers are lazy to create their own articles, most likely they won’t make the hassle of re-typing your content once they figure out that simple ctrl-C won’t work in your site.

How to catch the content scapers?

  1.  One of the free ways that you can do this, is to copy a specific paragraph from your blog post and paste it on Google search box.  Google will show you any match from your article and you can easily spot if it is exactly copied from your site
  2. Another easy tool that you can use is Copyscape.  You can have this option for free where you’ll just copy and paste your url and it will search through the web if your content is duplicated on other sites.   And if you want a more helpful detailed report, you can have the paid option as well.

How to file a complaint with content scrapers?

When you confirmed that your content is stolen, the first thing to do is to send a message to the webpage owner to express your urgent disapproval in reproducing your content.

You can try this direct approach first before taking further steps just to make them aware that they are caught guilty in this wrong doing. Most often, they themselves will take down the article to avoid further disputes.

However for cases when they do not reply or ignore your message, and you find that the exposure of your copied content will have serious effect to your business or site, you can submit a complaint to DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act).   This is a law that simply disallows production or sharing of copyrighted works online.  They have the capability to take down the blog or site if proven guilty.

Sometimes, it also helps if you look at the intention why your content was shared.  There are instances that you can still benefit by having more exposure if your content is shared as long as you are acknowledged as its owner.

The internet holds a world of information which makes it truly difficulty to track down any illegal acts without the help of experts.  However, in your own small way do find a way to get your site protected and always be ready on how to take actions when these situations happen.
